PCOS And Ovulation Problems

PCOS and ovulation problems blog

It is very well known that a female reproductive system consists of various organs to include the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and vagina.  Each organ plays an important role throughout the lifetime of a woman and any abnormality can lead to various health issues.  Of these, ovaries are the organs responsible for the production of egg or ovum and thus also responsible for the fertility health of a woman.  A woman has two ovaries that produce eggs each month that are later fertilized resulting in conception but if either one or both the ovaries have any abnormality, then conceiving becomes difficult.  There are many conditions that affect the ovaries, but polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common conditions that affect 1 out every 10 women.

Understanding the polycystic ovarian syndrome

The polycystic ovarian syndrome is a hormonal disorder that is commonly seen in women of reproductive age.  This is a condition in which there is an abnormal production of androgen (male hormones).  This leads to an imbalance in the reproductive hormone thereby causing infertility issues.

Ovulation problems related to PCOS

Since ovaries are the organs that produce eggs, it is very obvious that there is a strong relationship between ovulation and PCOS.  As stated earlier, any abnormality with respect to the functioning of the ovaries directly affects ovulation.  Likewise, PCOS also affects the functioning of ovaries.  In polycystic ovaries, the ovaries enlarge and develop  multiple follicles than normal .   These follicles are underdeveloped and hence interfere with the functioning of ovaries in releasing the egg.  This leads to ovulation problems and this is why women diagnosed with PCOS are likely to have irregular menstrual periods.

Signs and Symptoms of PCOS

There are certain signs and symptoms that can be indicators of PCOS.  These include, but are not limited to:
  • Irregular periods
  • Enlarged ovaries
  • Hirsutism
  • Acne
  • Infertility
  • Weight change
Male-pattern baldness Above are just a few to name.  Similarly, there are a plethora of symptoms that might not be quite noticeable and could be incidentally diagnosed.  However, if a woman is suffering from any of the above symptoms, there is a very likelihood of a diagnosis of PCOS and it is advisable to consult a doctor.

Managing PCOS

A holistic approach to managing PCOS is through yoga and meditation.  It has been observed that certain yoga postures have been beneficial in managing PCOS.
  • Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana) – This yoga asana for PCOS helps regulate thyroid function which is related to PCOS. It helps in relaxing the organs in the abdominal region.
  • Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana) – This posture helps in flexibility and relief of stress, and thus a widely practiced yoga poses for PCOS issues.
  • Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar) – This asana helps in weight loss and regulation of the menstrual cycle.
  • Breathing Exercise (Kapalbhati Pranayam) – This breathing technique focuses on improving blood circulation.  It also helps in weight reduction and is one of the most effective poses suggested for PCOS.
  • Reclining Butterfly Pose or (Supta Baddha Konasana) – This posture helps in strengthening the muscles of the inner thighs.

There are various other poses that help manage PCOS naturally.  You might find information related to these postures on various channels; however, these channels do not understand your body or your condition, hence it is advisable to talk to a specialist who will be able to specify the exercises that are required for your body.  At Prameya Health, women’s wellness is a priority and we have a structured program specifically designed by our experts to manage PCOS holistically.
